I know its common knowledge that Utica Rome Speedway has been up for sale, but now it appears that Gene Cole is really serious about selling it. They have an exclusive link on their website that explains every single facet of the property in detail. Asking price is 2 million for everything including track prep equipment. I am depressed to think somebody else will eventually take it over. I think they run the best show around. They have very little downtime between races up until intermission and then they run off the features and most nights they run a 4 division show in about 3 hours or so. Barb Clark does a heck of a job and so does the entire staff at the facility. I hope whoever takes it over doesnt screw it up. I guess time will tell. Maybe John Wight or Jake Spraker can scrape up a couple mil. They both run good shows at their speedways. Decent car counts and fan friendly promoters.
Testimonials
Well you know, Utica Rome does have it together!. Due to a couple of cicumstances this season in CNY , I made it to Utica for three shows. Very few if any mid-week specials near my neck of the woods. And then you had the Weedsport situation. Well, not a good move by the scheduling gods locally, as Utica is now my favorite track! I really thought Brewerton had it goin on till I went to Utica. Problem is that its a good long ride to get there. A lot of tracks closer to me. If that was not the case, I would for sure go to Utica weekly.
I think its pretty cool that every single time I go there, they start the show like 1 or 2 minutes before the posted start time. I dont ever remember them starting late unless it rained. But Brewerton is usually like that too where they start right at 7:30 like they post. But Utica impresses me the way they run off their heat races. Its literally one right after the other. No baloney with all the BS laps being run under caution before they throw the green to start the next heat. Plus good food, they dont lock you in and the place is CLEAN!
I'm with you on all of that. I had not been there in years. I think the last time before this season was an ESS race in the early ninetees? Put it this way, Mal Lane was runnin! Funny thing is, if there were some mid-week shows scheduled at either Brewerton, Fulton, Weedsport, RWR,or Canandaigua(they did have one), I probably would not took the ride over there! As it is, I was real impressed with the place at the Lucas show. So I went back to the New Yorker weekend for both days!
Yea, I took my first trip ever to Utica-Rome (after a night at Fonda the evening before), and I must say that facility was top notch. It was so clean, I almost felt like asking if I was really at a dirt track. The concessions were so well handeled (I really love the "Pick up here, pay there" deal they had going on), the heats were run perfectly with little to no delay, the announcing was great. If I was anywhere near there and not a 2.5 hour hike, that'd be my home track for sure.
AARN had an interview with Gene Cole a few months back around the time of the 50th Anniversary show and he said he was ready to sell. His family and staff did a nice job making the track what it is. Hopefully the next owner improves on what already is a nice place to watch dirt track racing.
I'm lucky enough to live 15 minutes from Utica-Rome. My son and I go there weekly (unless there is something that we absolutely can't get out of going to)lol. My wife just assumes that we will be at the races on Sunday night now.
Utica-Rome, in my opinion is by far the best race track that I've been to. The facillity is top notch, clean bathrooms, good food, the grounds are always clean and well kept, It always looks like opening day. The track is always well prepared, and the races are run quickly, with no screwing around. My son can watch all the races and usually be home before 9:30 (he's only 6).
We've been to many different tracks (14 or 15) the last few years, and none of them, in my opinion, have measured up to Utica-Rome. I would say the only track even close to being as nice was Thompson.
I hope whoever buys it keeps the same staff and continues running it as is. Gene Cole has done an outstanding job of improving and upgrading Utica-Rome, while still keeping the great history of this track alive.
Well I hate to hear that the track is for sale. My hubby and I go there at least twice a year for the past 3 years. All we can says is What a place. Great facility, lots of room, good food, awesome washrooms, great track and what a way to run in the show efficiently. We are 3 1/2 hours from there and it is great to see a show run like that. Thanks to everyone at Utica Rome for such an awesome job. You people are a class act. One night we were there and Mr. Cole noticed that one of the boards in the stands was a little loose. Next thing you know he had the crew tape the area off, repair the board and we were back to racing. Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really good for the DIRT racing fans, drivers and association. Thanks from all of us and good luck in your future. We just hope that whom ever takes it over is as good as you
