ANOTHER EXCITING NIGHT OF RACING ACTION PLANNED THIS SUNDAY
VERNON, NY- With just two point events in all divisions left at Utica-Rome Speedway, every show will be full of drama until the final checkered flag falls on the regular season. That drama will continue this Sunday, August 30, when Daryl’s Heavy Truck Repair and Gardner’s Landscape present a full slate of Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks. Racing begins promptly at 5:30 p.m. with gates opening at 3 p.m.
The magic number for Pat Ward this Sunday is seven, as that is the number of points he needs to add to his total that separates him and second place point Stewart Friesen to secure his second consecutive championship. If Ward is able to widen his margin by that number, combined with a start on September 6, he will again take home the $8,000 Modified championship. Behind Friesen in the standings and looking to improve their positions in the standings include Bobby Varin, Todd Burley, Ronnie Johnson, Willy Decker, Paul Kinney, Danny Varin, Jamie Christian, and Brian Weaver. Three drivers, Ted Lamb, Alan Barker, and Casey Williams, sit just outside the top ten in the point standings with ideas to crack into one of the paying positions.
With a start this Sunday, Jason Rood will take another step in securing his first ever Sportsman title at the popular Vernon oval. His closest competitor is Jeff Leslie, 68 points behind followed by Steve Way, and Matt Janczuk. The rest of the top ten is filled by Mike Button, John DeForest, AJ Filbeck, Craig Pope, and Claude Hutchings, Jr.
A three time champion in the Pro Stocks already, Tom Denton is looking to add another with two solid finishes in the remaining point events. Denton has been chased all season long by newcomer Rocky Warner followed by Bret Belden, Bill Knapp, Jim Normoyle, Shawn Frost, Mark Effner, AJ Digsby, Chris Mackey, and Rob Seavy.
Ron Hawker has been dominating the Pure Stock division all season long, and now all that is left is that he takes home his first Utica-Rome Speedway championship. Defending champion Chris Carr has been pursuing Hawker for the majority of the 2009 season, along with Frank Hyatt, Chris Cunningham, Bill Mason, Rob Thieme, Jim Thomas, Cale Hoffman, Phil Norman, and Mike Harrison.
Remember, the season ending New Yorker 200 Weekend is rapidly approaching on Friday and Saturday September 11-12.
